Staffing shortage in Labor & Delivery
Through out the conversation there is no mention as to who is responsible for this staffing shortage. This lack of coverage and backup wasn’t accidental. Whoever schedules these shifts should have consequences. Did the hospital suffer consequences and are they going to suffer even more consequences as the hospital’s action and reaction to the incident gets scrutinized? They did follow the legal guidelines but given that an election was happening that week, news of this incident would certainly effect the election for a parcel tax, Measure C, which passed by 7 votes. The lack of transparency can be ascribed to working within the existing bureaucracy about a complex set of reporting guidelines. What we are more concerned about is:
- How did this happen?
- Who is responsible?
- What is being done to assure that this isn’t going to happen again?
- How are the parents that were less than 4 weeks due that went through the formal process of having to switch to Ukiah and will their next birth see them come back to MCDH?
- What are the consequences and was anyone held accountable?
- Has anything changed?

We’re on the verge of a massive wave of support for both of these issues that cross political boundaries. We can survive until the next presidential election. The time to make a 20 year contract that would freeze our community into a long term relationship with another Healthcare entity isn’t now, when these two issues may completely change the face of medicine. So, what’s the hurry?
