Mendocino County Supervisors meet November 1st to take steps to alleviate housing crisis

“One of our greatest needs is the availability of quality, affordable rental housing. On Tuesday we will discuss a new State law that curtails expenses for constructing “granny units” and I’ll ask supervisors to join the City of Fort Bragg in offering residents a choice of several pre-approved construction plans, free of charge.”

Dan Gjerde Terry, if you were to hire an architect, or a draftsman and engineer, you would likely pay $10,000, or more, for custom plans for small houses like these. So that’s the value saved for the property owner. Two of these plans were originally selected by the City of Santa Cruz, and then the City of Fort Bragg, for their practical use of space, energy conservation, and simplicity. The third plan was designed by Coast draftsman Jerry Dorsey and engineer Michael Butler for the same reasons. I see these three plans as a terrific start for the County. In time, I would like to see additional plans, and to see more options designed and pre-approved for each plan.
By providing complete blueprints to Fort Bragg property owners, the City is encouraging the construction of well designed and energy-efficient second units. The plans, given free of charge, saves Fort Bragg property owners design and engineering fees of roughly $10,000.
